Opportunities. I was taught to change the context and see problems as opportunities. With that in mind, since the 4th of July my life has been filled with opportunities.

When the air conditioning went out on the beach house, we called our regular technician. He did not answer. Later we found out that he had died.

We tried other companies and could not get help on the holiday. We were sweltering so we looked for a motel room. but there were no rooms available.

The next day we got someone to help. They were great and we signed a maintenance agreement. Last week we went down to meet with them and get some work done.

Meanwhile, we had replaced the outside lift on the elevator because the sea air had ruined it. Thankfully we were able to get luggage up, but then it stopped working. When we left, at 82 years of age I had the opportunity to drag luggage down the stairs for exercise.

Meanwhile, lightening caused a surge that ruined our refrigerator at home. We had the opportunity to pay a technician only to have him inform us the parts we needed were no longer available.

We took the opportunity to buy a new refrigerator.  Then I had the opportunity to take several hours to move food to coolers and our other refrigerator. When the people came to install the new refrigerator, they could not figure how to attach the water so we had to try again the next day.  The same thing happened. Now we are taking the opportunity for our own person to do the work but it has meant another day of craziness.

Meanwhile, Jeny loaned her car to our housekeeper because the housekeeper’s car was in the shop. The next morning, Jeny’s car died and had to be towed. I had the opportunity to spend an hour with a computer voice before a real person got the tow underway. Two days later our mechanic has not figured out the problem.

My life is filled with opportunities!

Jobs Report

Self-Criticism. As shown in the graph, the jobs report for July was not a good report. President Trump fired Dr. Erika McEntarfer and claimed she rigged the report against him. The Democratic responses to the firing are not as meaningful to me as Republican responses.

I respect people who are willing to be critical of there own side. Good dialog requires the ability to think about weaknesses in our own positions. In other words, we need to be as worried about the planks in our eyes as the sawdust in our neighbors.

That is why to following quotes are important to me. Please note these are not the media interpreting reactions, they are direct quotes from Republicans.

Republican Responses to Trump’s Tirade

Mo Brooks, conservative Republican and former House member.

“What’s unusual about Trump’s July jobs report tantrum is that, for the first time in Trump’s second term, numerous notable Republicans are for the first time publicly chastising Trump’s juvenile antics. “

William Beach, Trump’s first term BLS Commissioner.

“There’s no way (a BLS Commissioner can fudge the jobs report numbers). The commissioner doesn’t do anything to collect the numbers. The commissioner doesn’t see the numbers until Wednesday before they’re published. By the time the commissioner sees the numbers, they’re all prepared.

“The totally groundless firing of Dr. Erika McEntarfer, my successor as Commissioner of Labor Statistics at BLS, sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the statistical mission of the Bureau.”

“(Trump) accused BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer of deliberately reporting false numbers to reflect poorly on this administration. This baseless, damaging claim undermines the valuable work and dedication of BLS staff who produce the reports each month. … The President seeks to blame someone for unwelcome economic news. The Commissioner does not determine what the numbers are but simply reports on what the data show. The process of obtaining the numbers is decentralized by design to avoid opportunities for interference.

Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyoming, said, “It’s not the statistician’s fault if the numbers are accurate and that they’re not what the president had hoped for.” Firing McEntarfer was “impetuous.”

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, adds: “If she was just fired because the president or whoever decided to fire the director just … because they didn’t like the numbers, they ought to grow up.”

This and That

Congratulations. Jan Pawol, the first female umpire to work in a major league baseball game. She earned it by working her way up the ranks.

Misinformation. Recently we had the drive-way at Jeny’s cottage paved with asphalt. The young man who owned the company noticed we were reading a book about Mr. Rogers.  He proceeded to tell me to not be fooled by that gentle spirit. He said Fred Rogers had been a sniper and a killer. The reason he wore sweaters was to cover his tattoos.  I listened and did not argue.

Later I checked and apparently this is a common claim. However, Fred Rogers was never in the military and this is another case of misinformation.

Thank you. A law enforcement officer and reader of this blog was involved with the recent shooting at a Target store in Austin Texas that recieved national attention. I was reminded about how much we need to thank law enforcement for the services they provide.
