Winter Storm. I hope everyone is recovering from the polar vortex faced by most of the country. My sister-in-law and her daughter’s family live in Nashville. They lost power. My niece stayed at the Vanderbilt hospital working to protect her patients. The other family members went out of town until power was restored.
I was reminded of two things for which I am very thankful. First, many people are making sacrifices and working to protect lives under very difficult conditions, power company employees, law enforcement, firemen and many others. Secondly, I am thankful for the privilege of having options — friends and family who can see to the well-being of others. Many do not have those resources. I have lived a very privileged life.
If the temperature is so cold, the obvious question is — where is global warming? The answer is—at the North Pole. Warming in the north is causing the vortex to push south.
Careful readers please take note — as I have said before, I believe climate change is occurring. We can debate the cause of the change but the effects seem very clear to me. A balanced statement can be found in the following: Arctic blast to wallop N. America—is climate change to blame?
In Mobile we got below freezing several mornings but never had snow or ice. Our camellias survived.

Please stay warm and drive safe.

Capital Punishment. I am not protesting capital punishment, but I am saddened by two death sentences in my state. The first is a convicted man, Christopher Barber who has proclaimed his innocence for over 30 years. Recently new DNA evidence put another man at the scene. The evidence was not available at the initial trial. A federal judge ruled that the new evidence justifies a retrial. The Alabama Attorney General is appealing the judge’s ruling. He wants to execute the man.
A second man was one of several men involved in a robbery. He was outside the store when an accomplice killed an employee. He is sentenced to be executed. A juror has written a heart-wrenching statement about not understanding he would be sentenced to death for a shooting that he did not perform and was not even present when it happened. She is against his execution. I support her. He is being punished for the robbery.
In my opinion, neither man deserves to be executed.

The difference between the means and the ends. With regard to protests in Minnesota, my major point is one I have made before. I support the deportation of illegal immigrants, especially the criminal element. I do not agree with how the deportations are being conducted. Even without the shootings, there are numerous documented instances with which I disagree.

Similarly, I support the legal right of people to protest the means of deporting but I do not support violent or destructive protesting. I do not support disrupting church services.

Renee Good, Alex Pretti. With regard to the shootings, I have repeatedly googled for evidence Renee Good ran over or struck the ICE officer. I have yet to see any visual evidence. I have seen visual evidence that an unarmed woman had her car wheels turned away from the shooter at the time he was calling her a f—bitch and shooting her three times at point blank range. I have heard claims of his injuries but no evidence to support the claim.

With regard to Alex Pretti, the visual evidence appears that an agent removed Pretti’s gun so that Pretti was unarmed when he was shot at least nine times. The visual evidence shows an agent clapping when the shooting was over. The sad thing to me is the government’s account of the situation compared to the visual evidence.
