Charles Sonny Burton. Previously I wrote of my sorrow that the State of Alabama was going to execute a man who did not kill anyone. A child of the victim, jurors and others did not want an execution. The man who pulled the trigger was given a life sentence. It did not seem to be justice.

Today, I write of my joy that Governor Kay Ivy commuted his sentence to life in prison. I even shed a tear.

The news was overwhelmingly welcomed. However, the current Attorney General and leading candidate for Senator, Steve Marshall, publicly disagreed.

A Comparison.

Donald Trump believes he was aggrieved. He claims he won the 2020 election and that many states cheated him. He claims his enemies in Washington DC, Florida, Georgia and New York coordinated civil and criminal charges against him. Women made up false claims against him. I will not address the truth or falsehoods of those claims.

My key observation is that he is a convicted felon but never served a day in jail.

Nelson Mandela on the other hand spent 27 years in prison. The underlying and primary reason was that he was a black leader under apartheid. He spent much of his time in solitary confinement. He was allowed one visit a year and one letter every two months,

When both men returned to power, each man took a different path.

Donald Trump publicly declared hate for his enemies. He set out on a path of revenge.  He put the weight of the DOJ and the FBI against those he believed wronged him. He called people demeaning names and attacked them with claims of treason. He appointed people and charged them with carrying out his revenge. Laws were sidestepped or ignored.

Nelson Mandela formed a truth and reconciliation commission. He stressed forgiveness and unity.

A South Florida university probes racist group chat tied to a local GOP official. I like James Carvil for one primary reason. He is willing to criticize his own party. Similarly, I appreciate the Republican Party of Florida for their actions in the following situation. I read some of the comments made in the group chat and they are despicable. This is the second time a Young Republican group chat has been criticized for racist conversations.

“Florida International University has launched an investigation into a group chat linked to a local GOP official that included violent racist slurs, antisemitic comments and misogynistic language. On Thursday, FIU said campus police will lead the probe and coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement. The Miami Herald viewed and independently verified the messages. FIU President Jeanette Nunez says the school does not tolerate hate, discrimination, harassment, racism, or antisemitism. The Republican Party of Florida also condemned the comments and said it’s conducting an internal review.”

Presidents and golf hypocrisy. I have a friend who is upset that $300,000 a year of taxpayer’s dollars is spent by the black Democratic mayor of Baltimore in an entertainment budget for the mayor’s office. I asked him what he thought of 71 million dollars of taxpayer money last year to cover expenses for our president to play golf. He did not respond.

I recall that Trump, when he was campaigning, was very vocal in criticizing Obama for playing golf. Trump made the public statement “I’m not going to have time for golf. I’m going to be working for you.”

Trump slammed as ‘hypocrite’ after clip shows nine times he complained about Democrat presidents playing golf

I find it interesting that my Facebook friends who joined Trump in complaining about Obama playing golf have never say a word about Trump playing golf.

This and That

Ecuador. I support our military involvement when they are invited by the foreign government. I have a high school classmate who married an Ecuadorian woman. They have a ranch in Ecuador but live in Albuquerque, New Mexico because of unrest in Ecuador.

I called him. He told me there are no drugs manufactured in Ecuador but the cartels use the country as a corridor for drugs from other countries. The cartels have created a very unsafe environment. He welcomes the US aiding Ecuador and hopes to return to the country if it becomes safer.
