For me, Thanksgiving is a season not just one day.  Because I have much for which to be thankful the season is special.

I have lived over 30,000 days. Not one day was I without food, water, shelter, clothing, transportation, medical care or love. Not once was I in danger of gunshots in my neighborhood. I was never around war or lived under a dictatorship. I have a great family. I could always worship in freedom. In addition, I have been blessed with much more than my needs.

In addition to the blessings of faith, family and my needs and wants being met, I have survived two bouts with cancer, a bleeder stroke and a very serious car wreck. I am thankful for every day but in the Thanksgiving season I like to give special attention to how truly privileged my life has been.

I am very thankful for friends. Many of you are long time friends. Thank you for those friendships and the support you have been to my family and me.

If Jeny’s knee is healed and she does not need the immobilizer, then we plan on flying to Grand Rapids for the Holiday. I will not post a blog.

Have a great Thanksgiving Season.

Food for thought. I have been having a good time playing with the implications of an important argument. I want to share it with you and see what you think.

Guns. The NRA motto is “Guns don’t kill people, people do.” The implication is that unless there is a manufacturing defect, failures in personal responsibility not guns, is the cause for deaths occurring.

The motto further implies gun manufactures and gun distributors are not responsible for the deaths. People are responsible for deaths.

I believe the motto is a true statement. I believe failure in personal responsibility not guns is the cause for deaths occurring.

Cars. I have been thinking about the implications if I change one word in the motto and implications. Consider the following when I substitute cars for guns: Unless there is a manufacturing defect, cars don’t kill people, people do. The implication is that failure in personal responsibility not cars, is the primary cause for deaths occurring in car accidents.

I believe the statement is true. Failure in personal responsibility, not cars, is the cause for death occurring in transportation accidents.

Again, the statement further implies car manufactures and car distributors are not responsible for the deaths.

We did not blame the car, the manufacturer or the distributor when Dawn was killed. Her death was the failure in personal responsibility of another person and his company.

Drugs. The thinking got very interesting when I thought about a third substitution. I substituted drugs for guns.

Drugs don’t kill people, people do. The implication is that failure in personal responsibility not drugs is the cause for deaths occurring.

Just as with guns and cars, I agree that failure in personal responsibility not drugs, is the cause for deaths occurring. My question is “what does this imply about drug manufacturers and drug distributors?” Does the fact that the drugs are illegal remove personal responsibility and make the manufacturers and distributors responsible for the deaths?

The United States would not have a gun problem or accident deaths if everyone acted responsibly. Similarly, the United State would not have drug deaths if everyone acted responsibly.

This and That

Protestors. I continue to have concerns about how ICE is conducting business. I certainly disagree with Stephen Miller that ICE agents have immunity. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/stephen-miller-claims-ice-agents-have-immunity-is-that-true/ar-AA1PmCjG. Other law Enforcement agencies are held accountable and the same should hold for ICE.

BUT I also have concerns about the protests against ICE. I do not support violent protests and violent protestors should be held accountable for their actions.

Misinformation is a concern of mine. I understand we cannot always be sure of what is true. However, we have cases where the facts are clear. In those situations, I am concerned about the people who state the misinformation. I am equally concerned about the people who believe the misinformation and those who know it is misinformation but will not call out the person sharing it. For example:

Unless Geographers are wrong, the US owns around 45% of the land bordering the Gulf of America.

‘It’s Mostly America’: Trump Exposes His Lack Of Knowledge In Local Geography, Believes America Owns 92% Of The Gulf Of Mexico’s Shoreline

Unless Gas Buddy and AAA are wrong gas is not averaging below $2 a gallon.

Trump makes false claims about gas prices

Unless my grocery store is unique, grocery prices are not down.

I try not to disparage Fox News but they misled their audience about President Trumps’s true statement that the Walmart Thanksgiving basket is 25% cheaper this year. He offered Wamart as evidence grocery prices are dropping. ( Trump says grocery prices dropping, cites retailer improvements nationwide | Fox Business ) Although the national Fox network reported the basket was cheaper I could not find a national report  on Fox detailing the fact that there was a reduction in the number of items in the basket. The basket may be cheaper but groceries are not cheaper, there are fewer items in the basket.
